The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
